Give Thanks

As I was going down the road last week on my “Great Lakes” 8-day motorcycle ride I had a recurring thought many times.

“… give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” (1 Thessalonians 5:18)

On a motorcycle, you have plenty of time to think. And plenty of time to give thanks.

As I went down the road, there were many instances and circumstances in which to give thanks. I gave thanks for the health I had to be able to travel. I was thankful to have a riding buddy to share the trip with, but I was most thankful to live in such a great country.

Around the world, the United States is bashed, sometimes deservedly so, for the policies we have abroad. But as I went down the highways across this great country, I met friendly people in every place I stopped. They were eager to talk, to help, and to share their lives with us.

I was thankful to live in a country where I can travel around with freedom, without having to show papers to government officials as I go from place to place. I was thankful for a government that had the best interests of the people in mind when they laid out roads with scenic markers, well-placed rest stops, and all the other infrastructure that we take for granted everyday.

I know I’m rambling, offering random thoughts but, lastly, in the upper peninsula of Michigan, where it’s quite desolate, Paul Prince and I were going down a two-lane road and I saw a large bird feasting on some roadkill on our side of the road several hundred yards ahead. I began honking my horn to get the bird to fly off because I didn’t want to hit it. The huge bird didn’t move. I kept honking… no movement. Finally, when I was nearly on top of it, I honked again and the large bird majestically looked up and then with a couple of big “swooshes”, flew into the air and away from our bikes. It was a bald eagle.

We live in a great country and today, I no longer take it for granted.

By the way, I didn’t get a picture of the eagle, but you can view my other photos on Facebook. They’re available for for all to see at this link:!/album.php?aid=58873&id=1618034237
