In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world —John 16:33
First, let me apologize for not posting while on my “Great Lakes Ride”. For some reason, this website wouldn’t let me post from my Blackberry®. But rest assured, Paul Prince & I talked about some of the topics Oswald Chambers talked about in My Utmost for His Highest each day.
In today’s devo, Oswald tells us what it means to get through trials as a Christian. He subscribes to the theory of “No pain, no gain.” No, he’s not talking about working out at the gym, but in our spiritual life.
God does not give us overcoming life— He gives us life as we overcome. The strain of life is what builds our strength. If there is no strain, there will be no strength.
When we’re going through trials, those aren’t the words we want to hear. We want to be delivered from our trials. We say, “God, get me out of here!” Instead, God gives us strength and life IN our trials.
As I think about that, I think of Richard & Betty Jones. Betty struggled with a number of ailments late in life and passed away at the end of last week. But she loved her Jesus. She came to services at CFC whenever she could, which was rare of late. But that never stopped her from worshiping and loving her Lord. He was truly Lord of her life and it showed as her face lit up when she greeted you… no matter how she felt.
And then there’s Richard, her husband. Richard was Betty’s caregiver for the last few years of her life. He is the picture of the devoted husband and an example to us all. As he cheerfully endured that last few years, one thing you knew for sure: He loved his Betty.
What a picture of Christ-followers!
As I think of them this day (the day of Betty’s memorial service), I truly see what it means to have eternal life. First, Betty had it while she was here with us. How else could she endure and continue to be a blessing to others???? — and she was! Now she has eternal life with her Savior whom she loved so much.
And Richard… he has eternal life that Oswald talks about above… life as we overcome.
